pitch Anniversaries

Meet Duane Cardinez – 9 yrs.

Before Joining the Pich team, Duane was roughly still part of the Pitch team. Joining Greg Bevington as on of the first two hires, he has seen the company grow from a bean. Skater aficionado and student of the NYC rap game, Duane wears many hats. Starting out at FCB in San Francisco, he quickly moved himself to the interactive department when Flash was still a thing and web advertising was still experimental. In other words, it made advertising companies no money. After taking a break from the agency life, he made his way to LA, working with UCLA WebSciences for sleep research and later artist Justin Bua. Not to mention editing a breakdancing video, starting a skate clothing company and even traveling to Alaska to expose Eskimos to breakdancing. Duane later found his way back to Advertising and the rest is His-tory.

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
Camouflage green. It will be a amalgamation of all colors in camo (even a little orange) and will result in a marble effect when you color with it. I don’t personally have an affiliation, but I think it would be a cool effect.

What are you known for among your friends?
The turn up guy. I try to come with some wholesomely ratchet, positive energy.

A six-year-old child asks you if Santa Claus is real…. What do you say?
When I was a kid, I don’t think I ever believed in Santa because I was in Brooklyn and we didn’t have chimneys. But now that I have a kid who is that age, I think it’s important to keep up that level of fantasy as it will be an innocence that you can’t come back to.

What animals scare you the most? Why?
I’m fascinated by most animals. But maybe a shark because you will only encounter them in their habitat. Thinking about the only thing between you and all their teeth, is your ability to swim, can be scary.

Would you let us hook up your ‘Recently Played’ list on Spotify to the office speakers?
It would be the new Jidenna album and my “Starred” playlist, so please do. I recently added some songs from NxWorries to the latter.

How would your pet describe you?
“I like that he lets me do my own thing. But, he either feeds me very little or too much. A man of extremes” says Han Solo the Uromastyx.

What’s the most money you’ve ever drunkenly spent in a drive-thru?
I’m normally  cheep, even when I’m drunk, except one time when I came out of the bar and spent $280.

If your life had a tagline what would it be?
Just take life one beer at a time.

How would you explain your job to a 3 year old?
I make things fun and easy to look at. Like when you color for your homework.

What could you see yourself doing if you didn’t work in advertising?
Working for Marvel. Something creative, no matter what.

What has been your favorite project or account to work on and why?
Probably when we worked on Transformers partnership with BK. It was a labor of love and the reward was getting a chance to see all the top secret concept art before all my friends. Oh, and naming the TF-themed burger was a highlight as well. Definitely better than watching the actual movie.

If you were given $5 million dollars to start a non-profit, what kind of non-profit do you start?
Probably isn’t enough money to start, but tackling the housing crisis by building affordable housing. But if it’s more realistic, a center for homeless children to get education could work with that budget.

What advice would you give to your 15 year old self?
If you are going to go all in, it’s ok to crash and burn for something you believe in. Don’t second guess yourself so much, especially if it is due to someone's opinion. Just because people sound like they know what they are talking about, doesn't mean they have the answers. Yeah, that and invest in Apple.

If you could go on a date with any celebrity who would it be?
Megan Good, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Emma Stone. Is this a trick question?

Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer?
Aren’t the two part of the same profession? But, Hunting sounds more tantalizing.

What was the last gift you gave someone?
St Bernardus Belgian beer, dark chocolate cashews with sea salt, and tea from Kenya.

Who is a person that you look up to – dead or alive?
Amelia Earhart because she wanted to do her own thing no matter what the adversities. I was always fascinated by her passion.
